ā“ Pump FAQ

Variable Speed vs Single Speed

Florida law now requires variable speed pumps for new installations. See why they're worth the upgrade.

Single Speed Pumps

Budget option • Replacement only

  • Lower upfront cost
  • Simple operation
  • Replacement parts available
  • High energy consumption
  • Loud operation
  • Not for new installations
$600 - $900
Installed • Higher long-term cost

Average Annual Energy Savings

$1,200+

A variable speed pump running 8 hours at low speed uses less electricity than a single speed pump running 4 hours. Most customers see payback within 12-18 months!

Pool Pump FAQ

Everything you need to know about pool pumps and motors.

What's the difference between variable speed and single speed pumps?
Single speed pumps run at one speed—full blast—all the time, using 1,500-2,500 watts. Variable speed pumps adjust their speed based on the task, typically running at low speeds (300-500 watts) for filtration and ramping up only when needed. This results in 60-80% energy savings, quieter operation, and longer equipment life. Florida law now requires variable speed for new installations.
How much does a variable speed pump cost?
Variable speed pumps cost $1,200-$2,500 installed, depending on brand and horsepower. Single speed pumps are $600-$900 installed. While variable speed costs more upfront, they save $100-150/month on electricity, paying for themselves in 12-18 months. FPL also offers rebates up to $300 for variable speed pump upgrades.
How much can I really save with a variable speed pump?
Most Florida pool owners save $1,200-$1,800 per year on electricity. A single speed pump running 8 hours/day costs $150-200/month. A variable speed pump doing the same filtration at lower speeds costs $30-50/month. Over 10 years, that's $12,000-$15,000 in savings—far more than the pump's cost. We can calculate your exact savings based on your pool size and current electric rates.
What size pump do I need for my pool?
Pump size depends on pool volume and plumbing. Up to 15,000 gallons: 1.5 HP variable speed. 15,000-25,000 gallons: 2.0 HP variable speed. Over 25,000 gallons: 2.5-3.0 HP variable speed. Importantly, with variable speed pumps, a larger pump running at low speed is more efficient than a smaller pump running at high speed. We'll size your pump correctly during the consultation.
How long do pool pumps last?
Single speed pumps: 5-8 years average. Variable speed pumps: 8-12+ years. Variable speed pumps last longer because they run at lower speeds most of the time, reducing wear on bearings, seals, and motors. Signs of pump failure include loud noises, loss of prime, visible leaks, or tripped breakers.
Can I replace just the motor or do I need a whole new pump?
It depends. If only the motor failed and the pump housing (wet end) is in good condition, motor replacement can save money. However, if your pump is over 7-8 years old or you have a single speed pump, we typically recommend full replacement with a variable speed unit—the energy savings will quickly offset the additional cost, and you get a full new warranty.
Why is my pump so loud?
Loud pump noises indicate problems: Grinding/screeching = failing bearings, needs motor replacement. Humming but not starting = bad capacitor or seized motor. Cavitation (gravel-like sound) = air leak on suction side or clogged basket. Vibration = mounting issues or internal damage. Variable speed pumps at low speeds are whisper-quiet—often the #1 reason homeowners upgrade.
What brands of pumps do you install?
We install all major brands: Pentair (IntelliFlo VSF, IntelliFlo3, SuperFlo VS), Hayward (TriStar VS, Super Pump VS, MaxFlo VS), and Jandy (VS FloPro, ePump, Stealth). All are excellent; we typically recommend matching your pump brand to your other equipment for best compatibility with automation systems.
How long does pump installation take?
Most pump replacements take 2-3 hours. We drain the pump, disconnect electrical and plumbing, remove the old pump, install the new one, prime it, and program the speed settings. If electrical upgrades are needed (variable speed pumps sometimes require larger breakers), add another 1-2 hours. Your pool is back up and running the same day.
Are there rebates for variable speed pumps?
Yes! FPL offers rebates up to $300 for qualifying variable speed pump installations. The pump must be ENERGY STAR certified and professionally installed. Combined with the monthly energy savings, upgrading to variable speed is one of the best investments you can make for your pool.
