Control Panel FAQ

Everything you need to know about pool control panels and automation.

What's the difference between a control panel and full automation?
A basic control panel centralizes your pool equipment controls in one location and allows scheduling, but may not include WiFi or app control. Full automation systems like Pentair IntelliCenter, Hayward OmniLogic, and Jandy iAquaLink add smartphone apps, voice control (Alexa/Google), remote access from anywhere, and advanced features like chemistry monitoring. We recommend full automation for the best experience and energy savings.
How much does a pool control panel cost?
Pool control panel pricing varies by brand and features. Contact us for a custom quote based on your pool setup and the features you need. Pricing includes the control panel, WiFi module, basic programming, and installation labor. We'll walk you through all the options during your free consultation.
Can I add a control panel to my existing pool equipment?
Yes! Control panels can be retrofitted to most existing pool equipment. We'll assess your current pump, heater, lights, and other equipment to determine compatibility. Most equipment made in the last 15-20 years can be controlled by modern automation systems. If you have older single-speed pumps, we may recommend upgrading to variable speed pumps at the same time to maximize energy savings—this often pays for itself within 1-2 years.
Do I need WiFi for my pool control panel?
WiFi is required for app control, voice control, and remote access—the features most people want from modern automation. Your pool equipment pad needs to be within WiFi range of your home router. If WiFi signal is weak at your pool, we can install a WiFi extender or use the manufacturer's wireless bridge solutions. The control panel itself will still operate locally even without WiFi, but you lose remote capabilities.
Which brand of control panel is best?
All three major brands are excellent. Hayward OmniLogic has the most advanced interface and best smart home integration—ideal for tech enthusiasts. Pentair IntelliCenter offers rock-solid reliability and seamless integration with Pentair equipment (IntelliFlo pumps, IntelliChlor salt systems). Jandy iAquaLink has the simplest, most user-friendly app—great for homeowners who want smart features without complexity. We typically recommend matching your control panel brand to your existing equipment brand for best compatibility.
Can I control pool lights with an automation panel?
Yes! Pool lights are one of the most popular automation features. You can turn lights on/off from your phone, schedule them to come on at sunset, and if you have color-changing LED lights (Pentair IntelliBrite, Hayward ColorLogic, Jandy WaterColors), you can change colors and run light shows from the app. Voice control works too—"Alexa, set pool lights to blue" or "Hey Google, turn on party mode."
How long does control panel installation take?
Most control panel installations take 4-8 hours (one day). This includes mounting the panel, wiring all equipment, configuring the system, connecting WiFi, setting up your app, and teaching you how to use it. More complex installations with multiple pieces of equipment or electrical upgrades may take a full day or occasionally two days. Your pool remains usable—we just ask you not to use equipment while we're actively wiring it.
What equipment can a control panel operate?
Modern control panels can operate virtually all pool and spa equipment: variable and single speed pumps, gas and heat pump heaters, salt chlorine generators, pool and spa lights, automatic pool cleaners, water features (waterfalls, fountains, spillovers), motorized valves for pool/spa switching, fire features, and even landscape lighting. Most panels support 8-16+ pieces of equipment. We'll design a system that controls everything you have.
What happens if the control panel breaks?
Control panels are very reliable—most last 10-15+ years. If issues occur, we provide repair services for all major brands. Common issues like relay failures or display problems can usually be repaired without replacing the entire panel. All panels come with 3-year manufacturer warranties. In the rare event of a complete failure, most equipment has manual overrides or can be temporarily bypassed while we source replacement parts.
Can I integrate my pool controls with my smart home?
Yes! All modern pool automation systems integrate with smart home platforms. Hayward OmniLogic works with Control4, Crestron, and other home automation systems. All three brands (Pentair, Hayward, Jandy) work with Amazon Alexa and Google Home for voice control. You can create scenes like "pool party mode" that turns on lights, starts the waterfall, and sets the spa to 102°F—all with one voice command or app tap.
